Il progetto di ricerca analizza in una prospettiva di lunga durata la costruzione territoriale dei fondo valle alpini, laddove questi ultimi possono essere definiti come il prodotto della dialettica tra due azione. Da un lato le forme di proprietà della terra, attraverso i diritti di proprietà posseduti dagli attori (individui, comunità locali, istituzioni ecc.) operanti sul territorio, dall’altro la scelta della valorizzazione delle risorse del territorio attraverso il loro uso e il loro commercio. Sulla base di questo approccio il progetto si propone di verificare l'ipotesi di slittamento dei fondovalle alpini da una situazione di "margine" – vale a dire di spazi di transizione, ma in continuità con il territorio alpino e fortemente integrati con questi ultimi – a un situazione in cui l'aumento di valore (funzionale, produttivo, economico) è andato di pari passo con il loro distacco dal territorio a cui essi appartengono.

Il progetto di ricerca analizza i modi di interazione delle collettività locali coinvolte nell’attività turistica con il territorio alpino tra il 1870 e il 1970. Nel corso di questo secolo la pratica turistica si diffonde come fenomeno di massa, modificando i modelli di fruizione della montagna, ampliando la sua frequentazione e incrementando la domanda di spazio destinato al soggiorno dei villeggianti (residenze secondarie e appartamenti di vacanza).

p>p>p>Nella regione del Gottardo sorge un nuovo impulso all´urbanizzazione. Legato a questo fenomeno ci sono la costruzione del tunnel NEAT, il progetto della porta Alpina, l´elevazione della Diga di Grimsel, così come le applicazioni di pianificazione di sviluppo per l´energia solare ed eolica.In aggiunta sono pianificati nuovi progetti per il turismo, alcuni in forma di resort; a titolo di esempio il progetto di un investitore egiziano (Mr Sawiris), ad Andermatt, dove 3000 posti letto saranno generati su di un´area militare dismessa.La serie di francobolli "Tecnologie e paesaggio" di Max Siegrist del 1950 mostra il retroterra tematico della ricerca proposta. In relazione alle costruzioni e alle infrastrutture nascono nuovi impulsi di densificazione e importanti cambiamenti nel paesaggio. La ricerca guarderà all´urbanizzazione dell´area del Gottardo negli ultimi 150 anni. Saranno investigati anche progetti non costruiti come possibili opzioni, per esempio le linee alternative per la ferrovia del Gottardo attraverso il Lucomagno.L´inchiesta unifica attraverso un nuovo approccio metodologico, passato, presente e futuro e permette di studiarne le relazioni con la pianificazione urbanistica.

Il progetto affronta in un´ottica comparativa trans-regionale il problema dell´incontro di tre aree montane (Vallese, Ticino, Valtellina) con la modernizzazione economica che si diffonde tra il 1850 e il 1930.
Il progetto è strutturato attorno a due assi tematici in cui vengono ad articolarsi approcci «micro» e approcci «macro». Nel primo si intendono analizzare le trasformazioni economiche (siano esse congiunturali o strutturali) che si sono prodotte a partire dalla seconda metà dell´Ottocento nelle tre aree prese in esame e il loro impatto sui rapporti territoriali tra le aree montane e quelle del piano. Si tratta, quindi, di capire com´è cambiata la struttura dell´integrazione delle economie di montagna nei sistemi economici regionali e sovra-regionali.
Il secondo asse tematico è dedicato alle ripercussioni della trasformazione dei mercati del credito, della terra e del lavoro (e della loro progressiva formalizzazione) sulle traiettorie familiari e individuali. Nel contempo, vengono analizzate le capacità dei nuclei domestici di calibrare il ricorso ai mercati in funzione delle loro strategie riproduttive.
