This interdisciplinary volume focuses on the politics, economics, technologies, uses, and cultures of maintenance of different forms of communication over long time or in Longue Durée.

Throughout the chapters, contributors from a wide range of fields explore transversal and trans-temporal issues of communication maintenance. Among these are the struggles to keep communication infrastructures functioning, the hidden work of maintenance done by both experts and non-experts such as everyday users, the political significance of maintaining communications (or not maintaining them), and the different habits and significance of maintenance in different times and world regions. The forms of communication covered include broadcasting, telecommunications such as the telegraph and telephone, digital and popular media as computers and mobile phones, mostly forgotten media like pneumatic tubes, transportation infrastructures, maps as used as tools to politically control land, the clock as a medium and a material artifact, and many more.

This book will be of interest to students and scholars of communication and media studies, the history of science and technology, general history, geography, maintenance studies, and other related disciplines.

In recent years, and with greater intensity since the outbreak of the pandemic, there has been a phenomenon of mobility from the city to the mountains. More and more city dwellers have chosen to move to the valleys, which are often marginal and depopulated, in order to escape the cities, which are perceived as unhealthy and dangerous, to promote new activities or to take advantage of teleworking in a daily life closer to nature. 

Da venti anni, il Laboratorio di Storia delle Alpi promuove e sviluppa attività e ricerche dedicate alla storia dello spazio alpino. Nato nel 2000 sotto gli auspici dell’Università della Svizzera italiana e dell’Associazione internazionale per la Storia delle Alpi, dal 2006 esso svolge la sua attività scientifica e didattica nell’ambito dell’Accademia di architettura di Mendrisio.
I saggi raccolti in questo volume vogliono render conto della ricchezza e varietà della ricerca storica sulle Alpi. Spaziando dalla storia materiale alla storia delle idee e ponendo l’attenzione su alcuni aspetti che hanno contribuito a forgiare le loro trasformazioni nel corso del tempo – le migrazioni, l’uso delle risorse, il turismo, i rapporti con il mondo industriale ed urbano, ecc. –, essi testimoniano il ruolo della storia quale irrinunciabile strumento per leggere e comprendere la realtà in cui viviamo e per staccarsi da uno sguardo schiacciato sul presente, che priva le società di prospettive e progettualità.
In un momento storico il cui il mondo si interroga sulle importanti sfide del prossimo futuro – dal cambiamento climatico alla transizione energetica, dalla ridefinizione della globalizzazione ai flussi migratori – le Alpi, con le loro potenzialità (ma anche lo loro fragilità), possono diventare lo spazio in cui progettare la sostenibilità del futuro, restituendo loro quel ruolo di attrici della costruzione europea che per secoli seppero svolgere.

Si possono descrivere i territori di montagna e i territori ibridi o “rurbani”, come luoghi nei quali urbanità e ruralità coesistono in uno scambio costante e dinamico? Oppure li si deve considerare come il risultato della contrapposizione tra mondo urbano e mondo rurale? Il compito dell’osservatore e dello studioso è comprendere gli intrecci o individuare i limiti dell’uno e dell’altro? Dai contributi riuniti in questo volume emerge la necessità di leggere il territorio montano e le ibridazioni tra urbano e rurale, attraverso un approccio transdisciplinare. Non esiste un solo punto di osservazione e una sola ragione osservativa. Ma se i territori sussistono solo in relazione al modo in cui li viviamo, li descriviamo e ce ne appropriamo, è indispensabile moltiplicare e far interagire diversi punti di vista per poterne cogliere la struttura profonda.

Lorsqu’il parcourt le Val d’Illiez dans les années 1770, l’artiste genevois Marc-Théodore Bourrit, compagnon d’excursions d’Horace-Bénédict de Saussure, s’émerveille à la vue de cette vallée « embellie de champs et de pâturages […] dont les flancs ont été cultivés jusqu’à la plus grande hauteur ». Or, rien de tout cela ne subsiste aujourd’hui. Le paysage agraire décrit par Bourrit a disparu : les champs cultivés ont laissé la place aux prés de fauche et, dans les hauteurs, il ne reste aucune trace des cultures d’autrefois.
Inspiré par ce témoignage, ce livre réunit une série d’études qui, dans une perspective historique, analysent le rôle de l’altitude dans les formes d’appropriation et de mise en valeur du sol, aussi bien dans les hautes terres de montagne que dans les basses terres des fonds de vallée de l’espace helvétique et de ses régions avoisinantes.
En conjuguant les approches de l’histoire environnementale, de l’histoire du territoire et de l’histoire économique et sociale, les auteur·e·s s’interrogent sur le rapport entre l’altitude et les formes de propriété et d’usage des terres à travers diverses perspectives dont la variété des systèmes agro-pastoraux, l’influence de l’économie de marché, ainsi que les cadres et les variables politiques et institutionnelles.
En effet, loin d’être figées, les relations entre l’homme et son milieu se modifient au fil du temps et l’altitude est moins une contrainte qu’une opportunité que certaines sociétés ont su valoriser et utiliser à leur profit.

La storia delle terre ticinesi fra XII e XVI secolo non è di carattere puramente diplomatico o militare. C’è un livello più antico e più profondo: la gestione collettiva delle risorse naturali e dei beni comuni, essenziali per l’economia delle comunità alpine. Sulla base di un’ampia serie di atti e documenti pubblici e privati, il volume analizza come le necessità e le competenze ‘diplomatiche’ e ‘politiche’, indispensabili alle comunità per amministrare e gestire efficacemente risorse naturali e proprietà collettive, abbiano contribuito a dare origine alla Svizzera moderna e alle sue peculiarità. Percorrendo tale linea di indagine, si scoprono gli usi e i costumi dei comuni alpini medievali e tardomedievali, i loro problemi economici, le difficoltà legate alle interazioni con l’ambiente naturale e le altre realtà istituzionali. Viene inoltre presentata l’opera inedita di un nipote del famoso storico Paolo Giovio, Alessandro (Descrittione de otto cantoni de Suizzeri, circa 1547), che rivela l’interesse dell’epoca per la Svizzera, proponendone un’immagine ‘dall’esterno’. «Questi Svizari – si chiedeva Alessandro Giovio – che ne passato si domandavano domatori de principi et defensori de la libertà ecclesiastica, et davano legge a gli altri potentati» stavano forse per «diminuire de la grandeza loro» e trasformarsi in una monarchia?

How was work done, how did income accumulate, and how was business conducted in pre-industrial societies? Through the experiences described in this book, the reader will discover a series of features distinguishing the various forms of work. Some are well-known, others perhaps less so, but all fall into three spheres: diversification of sources of income, creation of networks of contacts (professional and familial, political and religious), and adoption of complex business strategies.

What does the industrial past of the Alps teach us?

The various studies contained in this volume explore differences and similarities in the protection of the industrial heritage in relation to the evolution of memory and the construction of the heritage in recent decades in the alpine world.

Over the past few years, the cross-disciplinary field of research devoted to family and kinship history in Europe has seen the emergence of an important stream of studies developing wide-range comparative perspectives on great spaces and long periods. Their hypotheses and interpretative models differ somewhat regard of the factors taken into account, and of the underlying logic identified for these processes. The first part of this volume present a broad discussion of these recent developments. The chapters in the second part have an alpine focus and are dealing more or less directly with the theoretical framework proposed by Dionigi Albera’s book, Au fil de generations. The contributions to the third part of the book are further opening up the field. They leave the alpine terrain and are dedicated to some European contexts, with approaches that are generally influenced by the experience of Albera’s analysis of Alpine Europe.

The theme of the book is the definition of the relations between community and work in the alpine and subalpine environment. The setting of the Alps has resulted in specific forms of organisation of work and ownership, for example by emphasising the role of the collective management of land assets, but, at the same time, the organisation of work has modified and characterised life differently in mountain communities than in lowland communities. Alpine areas provided opportunities not always present elsewhere: exploitation of forests and waters, employment as guides, and transportation of goods by pack animals through the mountain passes and of travellers in transit. These were just some of the possible spheres of work in these areas. The texts that the reader will find in the book are organised into five sections: the first dedicated to collective needs and local resources, the second to the organisation of work, the third to trade and commerce, the fourth to infrastructure and, finally, with a function of comparison and contrast, a fifth section devoted to “other mountains”.
